Besides armed guerrillas, there were large numbers of auxiliaries of all ages and both genders, who did whatever was necessary to support the cause, serving as messengers, lookouts, guides, and medics. They hid supplies and materials, drove carts to transport men and equipment, provided food and water, purchased items on the black market for use by the guerrillas, gathered up useful materials left behind by Japanese units, treated the sick and wounded, collected and passed on information about the Japanese, painted patriotic slogans on walls, and kept an eye on neighbors collaborating with the Japanese, known as Makapili.
The Japanese allowed the Philippine Constabulary, the national police force, to remain active for local law enforcement. While some units conducted anti-guerrilla operations, most refrained from doing so or only went though the motions, alerting the guerrillas that they were about to launch an operation. Some units even held mock “battles” in the hills with the guerrillas in which the reported “dead” Constabulary members had in fact gone over to the guerrillas and their colleagues then requested the Japanese replenish the ammunition they had “expended.” Constabulary officers frequently passed intelligence to the guerrillas. As an example, 1st Lt Juanito Quitives, a Constabulary officer in Cabanatuan City, also commanded Squadron 200 of Lapham’s Raiders, which would support the rescue. To complicate matters, many of the guerrillas did not speak English but rather Tagalog or related dialects, and Filipinos from different parts of Luzon could not always understand one another.
